The scheme has not been reviewed for 10 years.
Grants to adapt, repair or improve the homes of older people, or those with disability, need to be increased.
That's according to Fine Gael Councillor Thomasina Connell, who says many people are not able to get work done because the funding available is not enough.
The Housing Adaptation Grant for Older and People With a Disability is currently a maximum of €8,000.
The Portlaoise rep says the scheme has not been reviewed for a period of 10 years.
