It occurred in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Investigations are underway after a buzzard was killed in Laois.

The endangered bird was shot in the Emo area in the early hours of Saturday morning.

The species is protected under the EU Birds Directive and will be looked into by the National Parks and Wildlife service.

Chairman of the Laois/Offaly branch of the Irish Wildlife Trust Ricky Whelan says the penalties for carrying out such acts aren't strong enough:

Upsetting Post This buzzard was shot this morning in Emo. What is wrong with people that consider this a sport to shoot these magnificent birds. The Wildlife Ranger has been been informed of the incident.
