The European Commission says insufficient action is being taken to restore bogs.

Ireland has been referred to the European Court of Justice over the failure to protect bogs from turf cutting.

The European Commission announced the move today.

It says the habitats directive requires Member States to designate their most precious natural habitats and to protect them from harmful activities.

The Commission states the sites in Ireland continue to be degraded and insufficient action is being taken to restore them.
