Irish secondary school students are among the top performers in maths and science in Europe, however there’s been a significant fall in the performance of girls.
The Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study 2023 has highlighted a large gender difference for the first time, with boys outperforming girls in both subjects.
The study involved 650 thousand fourth class and second year students in 65 countries, and is being welcomed by the Teachers Union of Ireland, which says the results are a tribute to teachers and students here.
