There is no maternity leave currently available for councillors.
Fine Gael's Thomasina Connell is expecting her first child this December.
But the Portlaoise rep is likely to have to continue her duties, given the new legislation for maternity leave for councillors has yet to be passed.
The proposed laws would give the option to nominate a substitute or to hire an administrator to assist.
Councillor Connell is hoping she might be able to avail of the new supports in the new year:
