A woman in her 50s is dead after yesterday's incident.
Local people are in shock this morning after the fatal assault of a woman in Laois yesterday.
Emergency services found the woman who was aged in her 50s when they were called to a house on Church St. in Portlaoise shortly after midday.
A man aged in his 70s was arrested at the scene and is now being questioned by Gardai.
Gardai are appealing for witnesses to contact Portlaoise Garda Station.
