A loca councillor says it is vital that services are protected.
Laois County Council is calling for a written guarantee from the Health Minister on the future of services at Portlaoise hospital.
It follows invitations from Laois TDs Charlie Flanagan and Seán Fleming to Minister Simon Harris to visit the hospital in the run-up to Christmas.
Labour councillor Noel Tuohy wants the Minister to commit to retain the 24 hour emergency unit before a general election is called in early 2020.
