Portlaoise still shows up as Maryborough when searching a place in Portlaoise on Google Maps.
A Laois councillor wants Ordnance Survey Ireland and Google to remove the word Maryborough from maps and replace it with Portlaoise.
Independent Councillor Tommy Mulligan is pressing for the change to be made as when searching a place in Portlaoise on google maps Maryborough comes up instead.
In the 1500's the town was named Maryborough in honour of Queen Mary, daughter of Henry the 8th (VIII).
In 1922 Maryborough town was renamed Portlaoise, but the Maryborough townlands east and west were not renamed.
This request is being put forward to the place names committee for discussion.
