Laois Farm Worker’s Death In New Zealand Was Preventable - Coroner

The 24 year old was steadying a mower at the time of the incident.

A coroner has found the life of a Laois farm worker in New Zealand could have been saved "if simple steps were taken."

The Irish Independent is reporting that Coroner Mark Wilton has issued urgent safety recommendations after the death of Ballacolla's Sean Clear.

The 24 year old was steadying a mower when a digger struck overhead power lines carrying 33,000 volts.

His employer, Coogan Contracting, failed to identify the power lines as a hazard and was fined and ordered to pay $100,000 in reparations.

The coroner said the death highlighted how basic safety failures on farms can have devastating consequences.
