Laois Senator Calls For Further Measures To Tackle Irish International Protection System

Sinn Féin Senator Maria McCormack feels the Irish Government also needs their own migration measures.

A Laois Senator says the Government is failing to deal with problems in Ireland’s international protection system.

According to the latest Department of Justice figures, 20,469 international protection appeals were pending in April 2026, an increase from 12,517 in April 2025.

Sinn Fein Senator Maria McCormack maintains that the EU Migration and Asylum Pact is not, by itself, a solution to the issues confronting Ireland’s international protection system.

She says the Irish government should be in charge of their own migration:
