Legal Deserts Emerging Across The Midlands

No trainee solicitors were in Laois last year.

Concerns are being voiced about legal deserts developing across the Midlands.

Last year, there were no trainee solicitors in Laois, Longford or Carlow, according to new figures from the Irish Independent.

While there were two in Offaly, and four in Westmeath.

Of the 581 contracts given to trainee solicitors in 2025, 479 were in Dublin.

The Law Society says it is taking steps to bring new blood into the profession through small practice grants totalling €800,000 since 2020.
