A man and a woman in their 20s were hospitalised after the two car collision between Athlone and Ballinasloe in the early hours of this morning.
The man is being treated for serious injuries at the Midlands Regional Hospital in Tullamore.
Gardaí at the scene say the M6 between junction 13 and and 14 will remain closed until around 4pm.
