Man Accused of Rape In Westmeath Sent Forward To Trial In Central Criminal Court

The man in his 40s was served with a book of evidence in Athlone District Court yesterday.

A man accused of raping a woman in Westmeath has been served with a book of evidence and sent forward for trial at the Central Criminal Court.

The assault is alleged to have happened in Athlone in June of this year.

The man, who is in his 40s and can't be named for legal reasons, was served with the book at Athlone District Court after Garda Niall Cahill from Athlone Garda Station gave evidence yesterday.

Sergeant Paul McNally indicated that the DPP had directed the man be returned for trial, on the single charge of rape at the Central Criminal Court in Dublin.

Defending Barrister Ross Nestor said no application for bail would be made at this stage but an application for legal aid was granted for solicitor Tracy Horan and two counsel.

Judge Bernadette Owens gave the accused an alibi warning and remanded him in custody to the next sittings of the Central Criminal Court.
