Gardaí were alerted to the situation on Tuesday afternoon.

A man has been arrested after an incident which required the local and national garda negotiators in Westmeath.

The man, who is in his 30s, barricaded himself into a property on Austin Friar Street in Mullingar at around 12.45pm yesterday afternoon.

The situation was peacefully resolved following negotiations and no injuries are being reported.

The man is being detained under the Mental Health Act and has since been charged and was due before Athlone District this morning.
