A 23 year old has been charged with the offence alleged to have taken place in February.
A man has appeared in court accused of raping a woman in a midlands town earlier this year.
The 23-year-old man, who is an asylum seeker and cannot be named for legal reasons and to protect the identity of his alleged victim, came before a sitting of Athlone District Court yesterday.
The Irish Independent is reporting he was charged with the alleged rape of a woman at Ballymahon Road, Athlone, Westmeath, on a date unknown between February 16 and February 17, 2025.
Gardaí say he made no reply when the rape charge was put to him upon his arrest.
The accused was granted legal aid, and remanded in custody, without an application for bail, to appear back before a sitting of Athlone District Court next Wednesday, June 11, via video link.
