Midlands Gardaí are appealing for witnesses.
A man has been left in critical condition following an assault in the midlands.
The incident, involving two men, occured on Patrick Street, in Mullingar at approximately 1:40am on Sunday morning.
The man, aged in his 50s, was removed from the scene to Regional Hospital Mullingar, and is currently in Beaumont Hospital.
The scene was preserved for examination.
Gardaí are appealing for witnesses or anyone who was in the area at the time to come forward.
