Midland hospitals are among those owed significant unpaid patient fees as part of a nationwide €60 million debt facing the HSE.
BreakingNews.ie is reporting Midland Regional Hospital Portlaoise is owed over €544,000 in unpaid inpatient charges and €1.7 million in unpaid emergency department fees.
The HSE says the outstanding debt is part of a wider €59.8 million owed by patients who left public hospitals without paying their bills.
An additional €138.4 million is owed by private health insurance companies for procedures carried out in public hospitals.
The HSE continues to recover outstanding payments through instalment plans and debt collection agencies.
