Midlands Homelessness Action Plan Reveals Financial Pressures Facing State

The State's spending on homelessness services has exploded in recent years.

The Midlands Region Homelessness Action Plan for 2025 to 2029 has arrived at County Councils across the region.

The plan underlines the strategies in place to tackle an issue that's been getting worse with each passing month in Laois, Offaly, Westmeath, and Longford.

There was 326 homeless adults and children in the Midlands in March, up 56% since October of last year.

The homelessness action plan underlines accommodation needs, healthcare requirements and support services for people in the region.

The key components outlined in the plan include early intervention, crisis services and community engagement.

The report shows there's expenditure issues within the region for services and supports.

Since 2021 spending on homelessness supports in the midlands jumped 150% in three years.

There is a significant increase in spending on private emergency accommodation.

The report adds there is a lack of dedicated facilities for families requiring them to use expensive B&B's and hotel rooms.

Emergency accommodation providers heavily rely on fundraisers to support their services, which is unsustainable.

The action plan emphasises the importance of prevention, rapid rehousing and sustained supports to issues with emergency accommodation and capacity.
