Midlands Junior Minister Calls For Independent Analysis Of Delta Data

The Taoiseach will make a formal announcement on restrictions this lunchtime.

Junior Minister Peter Burke wants NPHET's modelling of the Delta variant to be analysed independently. 

The Longford-Westmeath TD says it conflicts with the advice of other frontline virologists who think the easing of restrictions can proceed.

A formal announcement is expected this lunchtime, delaying the reopening of indoor hospitality until at least July 19th. 

The Fine Gael deputy says the data has been overly pessimistic in the past:

It would be impossible to police a ban on unvaccinated people eating indoors at bars and restaurants.

That's the view of Donal O'Gorman from O'Gorman's Bar in Portlaoise.

He doesn't think the industry will mind a two-week delay in resuming indoor dining to avoid a potential rise in the Delta variant.

But he thinks the latest proposals are "ridiculous":
