A Midlands MEP is accusing EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen of an 'underhanded' last-minute move to push ahead with signing the Mercosur trade deal.
Ciaran Mullooly is calling on Taoiseach Micheál Martin to urgently intervene, saying the move undermines a collective decision by EU leaders to defer the signing.
He claims the Commission is attempting to bypass Heads of State through a written procedure at ambassador level.
He wants Ireland to side with France and Italy, and says failure to oppose Mercosur would breach the Programme for Government and betray Irish farmers:
