Midlands Names Among Seanad Election Candidates

The deadline has now passed for nominations to vocational panels.

A number midlands names are in the running for a Seanad seat.

The deadline has now passed for nominations to the five vocational panels for the upcoming election to the upper house.

Anumber of high profile former TDs having missed out on selection by their parties.

Former deputy, Kilbeggan's Kate O'Connell, is among the omissions from Fine Gael's ticket of 13 inside panel candidates.

Former Sinn Féin MEP Lynn Boylan will contest alongside, former MP for Foyle Elisha McCallion and outgoing Belfast Senator Niall Ó Donnghaile. 

After some internal disagreements, the Green Party is fielding former EU and general election candidate Saoirse McHugh, along with Offaly's outgoing senator Pippa Hackett and Galway West councillor Pauline O’Reilly.

Labour has put a focus on young female candidates after getting no women elected to the Dáil.

Councillors Marie Sherlock, Annie Hoey and Rebecca Moynihan contest, along with Kildare-South councillor Mark Wall.

Fianna Fáil's final list includes former TDs Meath-West's Shane Cassells and Roscommon-Galway's Eugene Murphy, as well as Lisa Chambers and the outgoing Lorraine Clifford-Lee.

Ex Kildare South TD Fiona O'Loughlin, who was expected to be included, hasn't made the cut.
