AIT says this marks a new beginning for students and staff.
Athlone IT is being renamed as the Technological University of the Shannon: Midlands Midwest (TUS: MMW).
The college was given Technological University status earlier this month and is merging with Limerick IT to become Ireland's third TU.
TÚS, in Irish, denotes a beginning or start for the new university while MMW represents the principal regions, Midlands and Midwest, whose geography and provenance are linked by the River Shannon.
Prof. Ciarán Ó Catháin says in total 3,500 people across the Midlands and Midwest participated in this process, which has produced a name that is both reflective of our region and speaks to our ability to impact regionally, nationally and internationally.
