The sod will also be turned on the cycleway bridge over the River Shannon.
The new Athlone greenway will be officially opened next month.
Minister of State for Tourism, Hildegarde Naughton will visit the town for the ceremony on Monday October 4th, and also turn the sod on the River Shannon cycleway bridge project.
The Whitegates to Athlone Marina Greenway Scheme is the next phase of the route connecting Dublin and Galway, while it's hoped the bridge will be completed by 2023.
Minister Naughton will be joined by Cathaoirleach of Westmeath County Council, Frankie Keena for the event at 10.30am on October 4th at the Marina, Abbey Road, Athlone.
