According to findings in the latest CSO vital statistics report, there was a decline of 16% in the number of births registered in the final quarter of last year compared to 10 years ago nationally.
In the midlands, Laois saw a 17% decrease, with the number falling by 11% in Westmeath and 2% in Offaly.
