31 homes have closed in the past three years.
There is a fear that the elderly people of Ireland will be left "with nowhere to go" if the crisis in the nursing home sector continues.
It comes as the government intends to lift the ban on private nursing homes converting to refugee centres.
In the past three years, 31 voluntary and private homes have closed, meaning a loss of 915 beds in the sector.
Three of those nursing homes were in the midlands, two in Westmeath and one in Offaly.
