Local councillors say the ESB needs to involve them in the decision-making process.
Offaly County Council is to seek a meeting with the ESB to clarify the future of the Shannonbridge power site.
It comes as the energy supplier announced it would demolish the power station and replace it with cutting-edge renewable energy production.
Fine Gael councillor John Clendennen says it's not good enough that the local authority had to read about its decision in a press release when the issue has been raised so often in the council chamber.
He believes demolition isn't the only answer:
