The site has been donated by the Presentation Sisters.
An old convent and school in Laois is being converted into 52 social housing units.
48 one and two bed apartments, along with four houses are to be built at the old Presentation Convent and Sacred Heart school on Church Avenue in Portlaoise.
The central 3.3 acre site - which was donated by the Presentation Sisters - is being earmarked for the elderly, the homeless, those with disabilities, and small families.
Fine Gael councillor Thomasina Connell says it's an exciting project, which also includes community spaces, as part of the urban regeneration of the town:
