The funeral of Mark McCullagh Crichton took place this afternoon in Mullingar.

"Passion, humour and a good heart"- that's how a Westmeath man who lost his life in a road accident in Spain is being remembered by his loved ones.

The funeral of Mark McCullagh Crichton took place this afternoon at the Cathedral of Christ the King Mullingar.

Father Kevin Kiernan officiated the mass and described the complex mix of emotions from mourners in the community this afternoon:

Mr McCullagh Crichton lost his life alongside his sister in law Amy and girlfriend Michaela Newcombe following a fatal crash in Malaga in June.

Michaela was laid to rest earlier today in the same church, with mourners in Mullingar hearing how although they were only together for a short time, she was the  "love of his life":

Members of Mark's family were invited to the altar to give gifts with a Arsenal jersey, golf stick and ball, a dog lead for his pet Nova, sunglasses and watch showcasing the type of person he was.

Father Kiernan also read out a thank you from the family to the emergency services and hospital staff in Spain, extending their sympathies to the familes of Michela and Amy.

They also thanked the wider local community, and Mark's close friends who they described as a 'pillar of trust' since receiving the news on June 28th.

Amy's funeral will take place tomorrow morning at 11 in Ballynacarrigy.
