People in Laois are facing an extensive water outage after a mains burst in the county today.

Uisce Eireann says it's working to repair the issue which is expected to affect homes and businesses in Portlaoise and its surrounding areas.

The works are scheduled to continue until 10.30pm tonight after reports indicate a contractor hit a pipe in the town.

People are being asked to allow three to four hours for normal water supply to return once the works are complete.
