Laois County Council approved the project despite several objections from local residents.
Planning permission is being granted for hundreds of new homes in Laois.
The development will include 217 homes, commercial units, a restaurant, offices and a creche for up to 61 children, on the former Centrepoint shopping centre site in Portlaoise.
Plans also feature new entrances from the Mountrath Road and Harpur’s Lane along with cycleways, walkways and a playground.
Laois County Council approved the near 5 hectare project with 28 conditions attached despite several objections from local residents.
The scale of the development, road safety, pressure on local services, and increased flood risk were all cited by objectors.
