The body of a woman in her 50s was discovered at a house in Portlaoise yesterday.
A post mortem will be carried out today on the body of a woman found dead in Laois yesterday
It's thought she'd been assaulted.
Emergency services found the woman who was aged in her 50s when they were called to a house on Church St. in Portlaoise shortly after midday.
A man aged in his 70s was arrested at the scene and is now being questioned by Gardai.
A Senior Investigating Officer has been appointed to lead the investigation. An incident room has been established at Portlaoise Garda station.
Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to this incident to come forward.
Anyone who was in the Church Street area on Sunday, 5th July 2026 between 11:00am and 1:00pm and who may have camera footage, including CCTV or dashcam, is asked to provide this footage to investigating Gardaí.
