That's according to Longford-Westmeath TD Sorca Clarke, who says he maximised the use of his platform and position.

Michael D Higgins has been accused by some of speaking out of turn when described the government's housing policy as our "our great, great failure" during a public address yesterday.

But the Sinn Féin deputy says she agrees with the President's comments:

A former Tánaiste is among those criticising the President.

Senator Michael McDowell thinks President Higgins was "right in what he said" but he wasn't in a position to say it.

As a largely ceremonial position, the president doesn't traditionally give an opinion on government affairs.

While Senator McDowell agrees with President Higgins' sentiment, he believes he spoke out of turn:
