Prisoners Sleeping On Mattresses On The Floor Due To Overcrowding

That's after a 15% increase in the number of people in custody over the past year.

Around 50 prisoners have been sleeping on mattresses on the floor this week, due to overcrowding in jails.

That's according to the Prison Officers Association, after a 15% increase in the number of people in custody over the past year.

Four jails have exceeded their capacity and, in total, the country's 14 prisons, which includes Portlaoise and the Midlands Prison are 98% full.

POA general secretary, Karl Dalton, says it increases the risk of violence.
