Programme To Protect Nesting Birds Launched In Midlands

The Midlands Mink Eradication Programme is aiming to remove American Mink around Lough Ree.

A new eradication programme to tackle the threat of invasive species in the midlands is being launched. 

The Midlands Mink Eradication Programme is aiming to protect ground nesting birds from the threat of American Mink around Lough Ree.

Volunteers will be professionally trained in identifying and trapping thew animal around the shores of the lake, and shown how to dispatch them in a humane way.

The hope is to remove mink from the pilot area within the next three and a half years.

Programme Manager with the Breeding Waders European Innovation Partnership, Owen Murphy says the programme intends to leave no remaining mink in any area:
