Questions are being raised around the decision to construct a new building in Portlaoise Prison to accommodate the Defence Forces.
Irish soldiers were withdrawn from guard duty at the Laois institution after more than 50 years last week.
Laois Offaly Fine Gael TD and former Justice Minister Charlie Flanagan originally highlighted his concerns with stakeholders over the plan last summer, as it was known the soldiers would be withdrawn in the near future.
