It's being welcomed by a former detective in the midlands.

Rank and file gardaí have lost the ability to strike out district court prosecutions.

The Irish Daily Mail is reporting the new rule has been in place from Garda HQ since earlier this week.

Gardaí will now need the the written consent of a high ranking member of the force or the DPP to strike out cases.
