Repeat Offenders Could Face Jail Sentence Under New Garda Powers

Health Minister Simon Harris signed the measures into force last night.

The Justice Minister says there won't be a change of emphasis in how Gardai enforce restrictions because of new powers enacted today. 

Health Minister Simon Harris signed the measures into force last night, meaning gardai can issue a €2,500 fine as well as a six-month jail sentence to repeat offenders.  

Public Health officials are advising against complacency during the bank holiday weekend, 24 hours after Ireland suffered it's highest number of Covid-19 deaths so far.
