Retired Army General Supports Call For New HQ In The Midlands

He says there are a number of benefits to locating the first ever army HQ locally.

A former Defence Forces general agrees that the new army headquarters should be located in the midlands.

The new Commission on the Defence Forces has recommended creating a standalone headquarters for the army wing for the first time in the history of the State - and independent TD Denis Naughten is campaigning for Custume Barracks in Athlone to be selected.

A strategic memo on the recommendation is going to Cabinet and if and when approval is granted, a consultation on the location will begin.

A training camp is already located in The Curragh, but no operational HQ for the army exists.

Retired Brigadier General Ger Aherne thinks Athlone would offer a number of benefits, including a couple of hundred additional military appointments in the town:
