Retired Westmeath Chief Fire Officer Calls For Re-Examining of Beep Test

It follows a successfully settled discrimination case in Cork against a woman seeking a full time fire fighter role.

A retired chief fire officer in Westmeath believes the structure of the beep test needs to re-examined.

It follows an order requiring Cork Fire Brigade to pay €8,000 to a part-time firefighter in her 40s who failed to meet the standard for a full-time role in November 2023.

The fire service in Cork was found to have discriminated against her based on her age and gender. 

Terézia Foott, was employed as a part time firefighter, engine driver, and mechanic, and underwent aerobic fitness assessments every three years to maintain her position.
