It follows reports over six weeks ago that staff in Portlaoise were concerned that devices could be used to carry guns to inmates' cells.
Laois Fine Gael TD Charlie Flanagan says it's a technology challenge, but believes a solution can be found soon.
He say it's unacceptable that contraband is entering the prison in this way:
