Padraig Walshe was IFA President from 2006-2010.
Construction has started on a Teagasc Centre named in honour of a former IFA President from Laois.
The Padraig Walshe Centre is a €12 million project, for Sustainable Animal and Grassland Research.
Mr Walshe was regarded as a passionate advocate for the development of the farming sector and always insisted that science was the way forward.
The facility will feature state-of-the-art laboratory and animal metabolism facilities to support research aimed at cutting greenhouse gas emissions and nutrient losses from grassland-based livestock systems.
