Under 18s To Be Banned From E-Scooters Under New Government Rules

The rule is set to come into effect next month.

All U18s will be banned from e-scooters from next month under changes agreed by the Government today.

It will also be mandatory for all users to wear helmets and high visibility jackets from August. 

Later in the year, e-scooters will be reclassified to fall under the same rules as other mechanically propelled vehicles - which means they'll require a licence and registration. 

It comes as just under half of the intensive care unit beds in Temple Street hospital were occupied recently with children injured by e-scooters, including one from Laois.

Taoiseach Micheál Martin and other Ministers met the Garda Commissioner earlier to agree the new rules:
