Thomas Maher is being remembered as a gentleman and a good friend.
A Westmeath man who was the victim of a drunken assault last year has passed away.
Thomas Maher died on Friday at University Hospital Galway.
60 year old Paul Earley, of Donearl House, Meedin, Tyrellspass, in Westmeath, received a seven year sentence after pleading guilty to intentionally or recklessly causing serious harm to Mr Maher in Mullingar in January of last year.
The incident left Mr Maher bedridden and in a wheelchair in a high-support facility, requiring round-the-clock care.
A cremation service at Lakelands Crematorium, Cavan is taking place this afternoon at 2pm.
