Westmeath Councillor Questions Location For Possible Fleadh Cheoil Plaque

Councillor Denis Leonard feels Market Square is a more suitable location for the plaque.

The Fleadh Cheoil has brought millions of euros into the Midlands over the years.

That's according to Councillor Denis Leonard of Mullingar, where the first-ever fleadh was held 75 years ago.

Since then, Mullingar has hosted the competition on four occasions.

Each event has attracted hundreds of thousands of attendees, competitors and businesses to the town.

Furthermore, many visitors make use of local services and stay in local accommodation, providing a significant boost to the local economy.

Councillor Leonard believes a plaque should be erected in Market Square to recognise the event's origins and the significant contribution it has made to the town.

However, his proposal did not receive a supportive response from the council executive in the Mullingar-Kinnegad Municipal District.

The main concern raised was that the building in Market Square is a protected structure, meaning permission would be required for any permanent installation.

Instead, the council suggested that Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann could mark the anniversary by placing the plaque on a temporary plinth during the celebrations.

Áras an Mhuilinn was also put forward as a possible permanent location for the plaque.

Councillor Leonard, however, questioned the reasoning behind this suggestion, pointing out that Áras an Mhuilinn is also a protected structure.

He maintains that Market Square remains the most appropriate location, given its historical significance as the birthplace of the Fleadh Cheoil:

Funded by The Local Democracy Scheme.
