The man's body has since been brought the Midlands Regional Hospital in Mullingar.
A man's body has been recovered from a canal in Westmeath.
Gardaí in Mullingar were alerted to the incident shortly after 6am on Sunday morning in the Royal Canal around the Green Bridge.
The man, who is in his 50s, was pronounced dead at the scene.
His body has since been taken to Midlands Regional Hospital in Mullingar where a post mortem will take place.
The results of that post-mortem will determine the direction investigations take.
Gardaí do not believe there's anything suspicious about the incident at this time.
