A Westmeath professor in gut health says it's important not to downplay symptoms of IBD when visiting their GP. 

Today marks World Inflammatory Bowel Disease Day.

IBD is an umbrella term for a group of conditions that cause swelling and inflammation of the tissues in the digestive tract.

The most common types of IBD are ulcerative colitis and Crohn's Disease.
