A Westmeath man accused of assaulting a security guard during an attempted shoplifting raid at a discount store in the county says he "was on the streets starving with hunger"
The Irish Independent is reporting 50 year old Peter Flynn with addresses at Battery Heights, Athlone, Westmeath and Sarsfield Square, Athlone, Westmeath is pleading guilty to the assault and to a host of thefts between June 22 and July 19.
The thefts occured at Dealz in the Golden Island Shopping Centre in Athlone as well as three other supermarkets in the town.
Judge Patricia Cronin ordered the production of a probation report while no bail application is being made.
Mr Flynn is now remanded in custody until a sitting of Mullingar District Court on August 10th.
