Esker House in Athlone has secured funding for a major expansion of its services after the State recognised Westmeath as a priority area for refuge development.
The next step of the application will see a greenfield site proposed outlining the full extent of the necessary works to complete a new refuge facility.
This year Esker House has seen a 59% increase in helpline contacts, and has been unable to support 264 calls for refuge.
