Westmeath University Scammed Out Of Nearly €100,000 Last Year

It comes from TUS MIdlands's Annual Financial Statements report for 2024.

A university in Westmeath has been scammed out of nearly €100,000 after being defrauded by email.

The Annual Financial Statements Report for TUS Midlands based in Athlone states they received a legitimate invoice for €98,500 from a supplier in August 2024.

A follow up email was sent the following month, directing a change in banking details for the invoice.

The report says the full amount was paid without checking supplier account details were correct, as per their internal control system.

This led to a final loss of nearly €50,000 after TUS reached agreement with the supplier on a 50:50 sharing of the amount of the loss.
