The incident took place in Athlone last Friday.
Gardai in Westmeath are appealing for witnesses, after a woman has been left hospitalised after an alleged assault.
It took place at the Corpus Christi Church in Connaught Gardens, Athlone last Friday morning around 11am.
The woman, aged in her 30s, was brought to the Midland Regional Hospital in Tullamore for treatment of serious injuries.
A man, aged in his 60s, was arrested at the scene, detained at a Garda station in Westmeath and released without charge with a file to be prepared for the DPP.
Anyone who was in the area between 10:45am and 11:30am is asked to contact Athlone Garda Station.
